Calibration Guide for Motor Dynamometer



Calibrating your motor dynamometer is essential for accurate torque measurements. Follow the steps outlined below for a precise calibration process.


Equipment Required

- Motor Dynamometer

- Counterpoise (with known weight  G )

- Manual loading knob

- Measuring tape (for distance  L ))

- Calibration potentiometer access (usually on the rear panel)


Calibration Steps


1. Preparation

Ensure Safety: Before beginning, ensure that the dynamometer is properly mounted and secured. Wear appropriate safety gear.

Check the Environment: Make sure the area is clean and free from any obstructions or hazards.


2. Setup the Balance Loading Bar

Identify the Loading Bar: Locate the balance loading bar on the dynamometer's shaft end. The side with four hanging pins should face you.

Measure Distance  L : Measure the distance from the center of the bar to the end (where the counterpoise will be placed). Record this distance in centimeters.


3. Switch to Manual Mode

- Manual Mode: Switch the dynamometer to "manual" mode. This will allow for direct control over the loading process.


4. Load Adjustment

Set Maximum Load: Turn the manual loading knob to its maximum position.

  - Attach the Counterpoise:

  - Take the counterpoise with a known and exact weight G (in kg).

  - Place it at the end of the bar.

  - Determine the direction of rotation:

 - For clockwise (CW) loading, ensure the weight pulls the bar in the CW direction.

 - For counter-clockwise (CCW) loading, ensure the weight pulls the bar in the CCW direction.


5. Achieve Equilibrium

- Adjust Loading: Carefully adjust the counterpoise until the balance loading bar is at equilibrium. This means that the torque produced by the counterpoise is equal to the torque applied by the dynamometer.


6. Calculate Torque Value

- Apply the Formula: Use the following equation to calculate the torque value M :

  

  M = G * L * 9.81

  

  Where:

  - G = weight of counterpoise (kg)

  - L = distance from the center to the end of the bar (cm)

  - 9.81 = gravitational constant (m/s²)

7. Adjust Calibration Potentiometer

- Access the Potentiometer: Locate the potentiometer on the rear panel of the dynamometer.

- Calibration Adjustment: Adjust the potentiometer until the displayed torque value matches the calculated value M. This may require fine adjustments for accuracy.


8. Verify Calibration

- Double Check: Repeat the process to confirm consistency in torque measurements. It may be helpful to use different counterpoise weights to ensure the calibration holds across a range of loads.


9. Document Calibration

- Record Results: Document the calibration results, including the counterpoise weight, distance L calculated torque  M , and any adjustments made to the potentiometer.


 10. Final Checks

- Revert Settings: Once calibration is complete, ensure the dynamometer is set back to its standard operational settings.

- Test Run: Conduct a brief test run to ensure the dynamometer is functioning correctly and that the calibration is effective.
